Couples &

Marriage

Therapy

Our relationships with others are often the most influential part of our day-to-day lives, and our romantic relationships are no different. Couples and marriage therapy aims to strengthen the bond between two individuals who are romantically involved and committed to each other. Through the time spent in sessions, couples will learn to communicate effectively, address underlying issues within the relationship, gain insight into themselves as individuals but also gain insight into their partners, and ultimately pave the way for their relationship to flourish.

Unlike individual therapy where the therapist is focused solely on the one client, Couples and Marriage Therapy requires the relationship to become the client. This means that neither party is the primary focus and neither person will be receiving individual therapy from the therapist.

Why Doesn’t Insurance Cover It?

Couples and Marriage Therapy is not usually covered by health insurance because it’s not deemed “medically necessary”.

In order for coverage to apply, a mental health diagnosis is necessary.  So when it comes to couples therapy, a mental health diagnosis is usually not appropriate. This is because “relationship issues” is not considered a mental health diagnosis by insurance company standards.
